Even if the level of industrialisation in Linz was not comparable with that in other industrial regions in Europe, several large businesses became established and took on leading positions. The first stage of industrialisation in and around Linz started through the textile industry.

After 1832, Kleinmünchen, with its textile factories, developed into the centre of the cotton industry in the province. But significant ironworking companies such as the shipyard (1840), the railway workshop (1858) and the railway engine factory Krauss & Comp (1880) settled in Linz. The tobacco factory (1850), the Poschacher brewery (1854) and the chicory coffee factory Franck (1879) might be named as examples of the food and luxury goods sector.
