Please direct inquiries concerning archival documents (including building files) to archiv.lesesaal@mag.linz.at. Where possible, we offer to scan and digitally transmit documents for a fee.
The Archives of the City of Linz (reading room and building files archive) can only be used with appointment:
In order to speed up the process on site, please specify the reason for your research or the required documents when registering online. This allows us to prepare the requested or relevant archival documents for you in advance.
Please note that the appointment is only valid for one person. If you are planning to visit the reading room with one or more accompanying people, additional appointments must be made for each person.
The use of the archives on site is free of charge. Access to the building file archive is subject to § 17 of the Allgemeines Verwaltungsverfahrensgesetz (general law on administrative processes).
The activities of the Archives of the City of Linz are regulated by the Oberösterreichisches Archivgesetz (Upper Austrian law on archives) and the City of Linz' Archivordnung (ordinance on archiving).
Requirements for access to the building files
Owners of the property:
- official identification document
- current extract from the land register of the property (no older than three months)
People, who are not the owners of the property:
- official identification document
- current extract from the land register of the property (no older than three months)
- letter of authorization
These documents must be provided in advance (via scan) in order to get access to the files.

How to find us
The Archives of the City of Linz are located in the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) of the City of Linz, Hauptstraße 1–5, 3rd floor, Room No. 3043.
Parking is available in the underground car park of the Neues Rathaus at short-term parking rates.
You can reach us from the main railway station with the tram lines 1 to 4, tram stop Rudolfstraße.
